Montessori 101: An Introduction to Montessori Education

Montessori 101 will set the stage for a sea change in the adult’s perspective on child development, and what it truly means to “educate a child.”

This five-day course is designed for any adult who works with children, including teachers, after-school instructors, program administrators, nannies, parents, and grandparents.

Participants will begin by examining the core principles in Montessori education as they apply to the developmental continuum. Participants will receive an overview of child development through the exploration of Montessori’s theories on stage development, positive relationships with children, and the prepared environment. This course will also investigate the historical perspective on Montessori education and how current research supports Montessori's conclusions and her resulting approach.

Specific topics include:
Perspectives on Montessori education
The adult/child relationship
The development of independence
Montessori’s concepts of freedom, self-discipline, and the path towards responsibility
Learning environments that support development
Establishing rapport with children
Implementing effective positive communication
